The seventh generation of the Salomon wine-making tradition, Dr. Bert and Gertrud Salomon have been at the helm of the Undhof Winery since overtaking it from Bert’s elder brother, Erich, in 2002.
Since then, Bert has devoted his entire energies to the vineyard and wine cellar. The unique conditions of the SALOMON UNDHOF create a distinctive microclimate, which is reflected in its exceptional wines. These wines are liquid proof that, after a variety of different careers, Bert has finally found his calling -- the quest for perfect harmony in his vineyard and its wines. This strong sense of balance and purpose has characterized his previous career paths as well, whether as board member of Schlumberger AG Vienna or as managing director of the Austrian Wine Marketing, Ltd.
Gertrud Salomon, his wife, works alongside him as his congenial partner in marketing and sales. After more than fifteen years working in the marketing and PR branches of L´Oréal Austria, she has thrown all her professional passion into the world of her husband’s wines.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Erich Salomon carried on the tradition of SALOMON UNDHOF from 1971 to 2002. Inspired by the Hospice de Baune, he took over the deteriorating nearby monastery Und, breathing new life into the old stones with the first national Austrian vinothêque, called "Weinkolleg Kloster Und."
In the 1930s, Fritz Salomon (1905-1971) was a pioneer in the production of the natural dry white wines for which Krems and the Wachau Valley are now famous. His work established a distinguished reputation for the SALOMON UNDHOF not just in Austria, but beyond its borders as well, becoming the first wine-maker to export wines within Europe and to the USA.
